Part I
1. What kind of music do you like?
Well, my favorite type of music would be rock & roll. Actually I wasn't so keen on listening to rock music at first. Then I watched the latest season of American Idol, probably the most popular TV show ever. The runner-up is Adam Lambert. I really think he deserves the winner title. I was instantly captivated by his performance of ‘Mad World', typical rock music and from then on, I started to listen to rock& roll music instead of slow, soft love songs I used to like a lot.
2. Do you like painting?
No, not so much. In fact, on a scale of one to ten, my painting skill is probably somewhere around the negative range. From day 1 I started learning painting back in kindergarten, I knew I could never be a painter and my confidence as well as interest in painting dropped.
3. What kind of musical instrument do you play?
I don't play any kind of musical instrument but I do have a lot of friends who can play guitar and piano. I used to take piano lessons back in primary school and soon I realized I was not a pianist material. So I quit and I haven't attempted learning any more instruments.
Part II
Describe a place where you can listen to music.
You should say:
Where the place is.
What kind of music is played there.
Why you like the place.
And explain how the place influences you.
Well, off the top of my head, the place where I can listen to music is none other than the western restaurant I hit a lot. It's located in the downtown area, rather close to the IELTS examination centre. To be honest, the food there is quite overpriced and of mediocre quality but I do enjoy the band performances. Especially at night after 9pm, the band hired from overseas would put up a performance there. The lead singer, a slim and pretty Canadian girl around 25 years old, is truly talented. The songs vary from heavy metal, rock & roll, to R & B and country music. The place can get really crowded over the weekend. Nearly every Friday night, I would get to the restaurant at seven, about two hours before the performance starts so that I can get a good chance of taking front seats. I often order a beef steak for my dinner and chitchat with my friends. As the performance kicks off, I will order some drinks, enjoying the music while drinking. Even though the singer couldn't speak a word of Chinese, she is really good at spicing up the atmosphere by waving to the crowd or occasionally jumping onto the table and dance. I really love the place.
Part III
1. Should kids learn to play musical instrument?
Contrary to the popular belief widely held by many parents, I don't think children should learn musical instrument. This is because Chinese students are already under too much pressure and forcing them to learn musical instruments will not do students any good. I firmly believe that children should do whatever they are interested in and parents should let go of their children, encouraging their children to learn what they really like instead of becoming the decision maker of their kids' future.
2. What's your opinion towards people downloading music from the Internet for free?
Downloading music for free from the Internet apparently violates the Intellectual Property Rights, and it jeopardizes the interests of artists. However, this is a grey zone in China because the real copies of CD albums are way too expensive for ordinary people to afford. Hence, it's not surprising those music-lovers turn to fake copies instead.
3. What influence does technology have on music?
The influence exerted by modern technologies on music is tremendous. The introduction of modern technologies will dramatically enhance the audio effects of soundtracks in the albums, making consumers feel the money is well spent. Besides, computer technologies also play an important role in enhancing the visual effects of MTV which would attract more potential buyers and boost sales.
